It has long been one of the Burgenland band legends: the music group PAX from Croatian Geresdorf (Oberpullendorf district). This year the musicians celebrate the 45th anniversary of the band with cult status.

Behind PAX are Berti Kuzmits (vocals and guitar), Franz Kröpfl (drums), Franz Jambrich (bass) and Feri Fellinger (keyboards). On February 4, 1978, PAX performed for the first time. “We basically grew up together, you might even say that we are best friends. We dreamed of a music group together, the role models at the time were Bruji,” said Fellinger. Many of the local population would have supported the young band. The first appearance was then at the fire brigade ball in Croatian Geresdorf.

Broad repertoire
One of the strengths of the band, which is four and a half decades old, is that it adapts to every audience and draws from a diverse repertoire of English, Croatian and German-language songs. For example, the theme song from the television series “Towards the Sun” from the 1980s is known to a wide audience.

The backing of Kroatisch Geresdorf was and is important for the band. “I can still remember very well when Hans Palatin, that was our good friend who has unfortunately passed away, drove to Vienna with us in his VW bus. We went into a music store and bought all our instruments. Then we drove to Geresdorf and set everything up. So it was like Easter and Christmas and a birthday all at once,” said Kröpfl.

Several singers
The core of the band has remained the same, in the past decades various musicians such as Max Prenner or Rudi Neumayr have accompanied the band once more and once more. Various singers also shaped the sound of PAX: Corazon Verdillo, Kristina and Karin Gregorich, Christiana Uikiza and Marija Alac.

Friendship cements the band
The four founding members attribute the long existence of the band to their friendship. Fans have PAX in all age groups. The energy is still there, Berti Kuzmits rejoiced – on and behind the stage: “When we play on stage and the young girls and boys jump, I’m 18 once more. I think to myself: My long hair is already there away, but they are not necessary at all.”
On Saturday, PAX can be heard live with other bands from 8 p.m. in Croatian Geresdorf, and at 3 p.m. a big festival begins in the village with many clubs and a Tamburica Woodstock.
