It was at the small cemetery at Nuuroa Point, in Punaauia, that Jeanine Sylvain was buried this Saturday morning, in the presence of her family, her children, grandchildren and loved ones. A burial in privacy and meditation for this great lady of Tahiti of yesteryear, who died in her hundredth year.

A chain of love for Jeanine Sylvain, a woman of charm and action, this Saturday, January 5, in the small cemetery at Nuuroa Point, in Punaauia. “Mamichou”, as his family called him, left his mark on younger generations. One of her grandsons, Teiki Sylvain-Kimball, whom she raised for ten years, is today grateful for his education. He remembers this anecdote: “When I was little, I tried to learn to dance the tamure, the pa’oti. I mightn’t do it and one day everyone at school made fun of me. I arrived home in tears. And she took her whole followingnoon to teach me and it clicked that day. And no one made fun of me anymore.

All salute the accomplishment of a life. Some, like her son, Teva, admire the embodiment of the liberated Polynesian woman. “It was with her that my dad started the first photos showing the vahine in all its splendor, even though it had been treated trivially for years..”

Refinement, passion and joie de vivre…each one keeps the memory of an inspiring woman. “Lots of love and joy, remembers Tepuanui Snow, one of his nephews. Jeanine was an extraordinary person and today she is reunited with her lover.

The beauty and elegance of fenua,” remembers Rachel, one of her friends. “She had something special, says Tea Hirshon, another friend of hers. This joy of living that everyone appreciated.

The muse of photographer Sylvain Adolphe had just celebrated her 99th birthday…a great age to join the love of her life.
