Are there age restrictions for the theatre?
Each week, a TCS legal expert gives you the answer to a legal question.
In principle no, because the age limit for cultural events is not regulated at national level in Switzerland.
Legislative competence in matters of youth protection in the field of culture and the media lies primarily with the cantons.
Youth protection is a cantonal matter
Under constitutional law, children and young people are entitled to special protection of their integrity and encouragement of their development. However, the Confederation only regulates youth protection on an ad hoc basis. For example, young people can only attend a play containing pornographic elements from the age of 16.
Films and video games: the protection of minors regulated at national level
Unlike live cultural events, the protection of minors in the field of films and video games will in future have to be regulated at national level: the National Council and the Council of States are currently discussing a draft “Federal Law on the protection of minors in the film and video game sectors”.
