According to the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (OCMA), there are 1,842 Ukrainian refugee children living in Latvia who are not registered in any educational institution, and presumably these children are receiving education in Ukraine remotely.
As Cristina Niedre-Latere, Deputy State Secretary for General Education of the Ministry of Education and Science explained, distance education does not provide children with the necessary social contacts, as a result of which their well-being and psycho-emotional state suffers. If children study in Latvian schools, they will be able to receive the necessary support both in their studies and in their integration into society.
The Ministry of Education proposes a number of solutions that need to be implemented in schools to better integrate these children into the Latvian education system.
One of them is to make it a priority to study the Latvian language in groups or individually.
It is also possible to provide an individual lesson plan for intensive study of the Latvian language in a group or individually and for subjects in which at the end of the training stage it is necessary to pass state tests – mathematics, Latvian language, foreign language.
In the third model, the priority is intensive learning of the Latvian language individually or in a group. This support measure will be provided for a maximum of one academic year. Other subjects may be partially covered.
Starting this school year, Latvia has introduced an inclusive school year for new arrivals from Ukraine, where they are given the opportunity to learn the language before starting regular education.
Currently, Ukrainian refugee children in Latvia can choose the most suitable form of education – full-time or distance learning. Many Ukrainian children choose distance learning. Now their parents will have to decide.
