Vientulii is the smallest border control point on the Latvian-Russian border.
Some time ago, the Latvian Ministry of the Interior stated that Russia decided that from October 16, all holders of Ukrainian passports will have the right to enter Russia from third countries only through two checkpoints, one of which is located in Vientulii.
According to the Ministry of the Interior, such a decision shows that conditions are being created on the border between Latvia and Russia, which can seriously affect public order and pose a threat to the country’s security.
According to the Ministry of the Interior, there is reason to believe that such a decision by Russia is a response to the decision of the European Union, as well as Latvia, to ban the entry of vehicles with Russian license plates.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will inform Russia about the Riga decision.
After closing these border crossing points, the resources of the State Border Guard Service and other services will be available for the protection of other sections of the border, say Latvian officials.
There are still border crossing points in Terechova and Grebneva on the border between Latvia and Russia.
Earlier, in response to pressure from illegal immigration, the government decided to close the Silene border checkpoint on the Latvian-Belarusian border in mid-September.
