HBO‘s Jon Snow-centered Game of Thrones sequel has been shelved, Kit Harington confirmed on Tuesday.
“There are no plans for it at the moment. It’s off the table for the foreseeable,” Harington told the Associated Press.
Game of Thronesbased on the fantasy book series by George R.R. Martin, finished its eighth and final season in 2019. HBO’s prequel series, House of the Dragonpremiered in 2022, with a second season scheduled for this June.
Also in 2022, plans surfaced for a Game of Thrones sequel series centered on Jon Snow, with Harington attached to reprise his role.
Updates on the status of the potential project have remained sparse ever since, but showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss told The Hollywood Reporter in January they hadn’t written off the sequel entirely.
“It would be so great; nothing would make us happier than to work with our people from that show,” Weiss said. “But there are a lot of other ways to make that happen that are fresh and exciting for everyone involved. Also, unless [Kit Harington] has been doing a lot of working out, that’s a really heavy cloak for a guy in his 40s to carry around — it’s like 60 pounds.”
As such, the duo said it might be a better idea when more time has elapsed since the original show’s finale. “Maybe when we’re 80 and Kit’s approaching retirement,” Weiss joked, “He can throw that cloak on once more with real gray in his beard.”
