On the occasion of the announcement of The Last Of Us Part.II Remastered (which is expected on PS5 on January 19, 2024), Neil Druckmann, the current co-president of Naughty Dog spoke with Entertainment, a famous American media to return to several points, including the release of The Last Of Us Part.II in 2020.
It’s been more than three years since we had the last adventures of Ellie and Joël, it was in June 2020 on PS4. In a few weeks, we will have the opportunity to dive back into this completely crazy story thanks to an ultimate version on PS5: The Last Of Us Part.II Remastered.
On the program, native 4K, 60FPS, new new content with “ Lost Levels » and the mode « No Return” And much more. On the sidelines of the release of this reissue, Neil Druckmann spoke with Nick Romano, an Entertainment journalist to look back on the release of this Part.II in 2020.
Neil Druckmann first looks at the impact around the game’s release and the completely crazy response from fans over the years. Even three years following the release of this sequel, and ten years following the release of the first game, the enthusiasm is still as strong and powerful.
“The release of The Last of Us Part.II was a deeply emotional experience for all of us at the studio, and we are so proud to have been able to tell the story we wanted with this game. It’s ultimately up to the fans of decide what does or does not stand the test of time. Over the years, we have continually been blown away by the outpouring of love, support, and acclaim for this game that means so much to Naughty Dog. There are more and more fans discovering this story, and we hope there will be even more of them with The Last of Us Part II Remastered. It’s a wonderful reminder of the power the stories we tell can have. What we say in our games impacts players’ lives and that continues to inspire us for our next games.” – Neil Druckmann
Concerning this Remastered version, it is considered by Neil Druckmann as a “Criterion Collection” offering a “climax” withle mode No Return. And speaking of this climax, the journalist asks Druckmann if we have any chance of seeing characters from the HBO series arrive in this “No Return” mode which will allow us to control lots of characters like Lev, Abby or even Tommy. On this point, you obviously shouldn’t count on it too much:
“Since Perry and Kathleen are in the first part of the story, there is no point in adding them to No Return. This is a new game mode that is built around the characters from the second part. We can’t wait to share it all with the fans.” – Neil Druckmann
Neil Druckamnn and the journalist then return to the other main novelty of this Remastered, the arrival of Lost Levels. Here is how Neil describes them:
“Tell you that these levels were left on the cutting room floor. You’ll have several sequences, such as a scene set during a party in Jackson that offers a glimpse into Ellie’s life in the city. These scenes aren’t just meant to give you the opportunity to play through it through a context-free, early development version. Each sequence includes interactive elements that will allow developers to comment on their intentions in the level. They will explain to you what was supposed to happen and ultimately why the scene didn’t make the cut. The Lost Levels bonus offered us a chance to really dive into the crafting process with reactions and observations that are intrinsically associated with the experience of playing the game.” – Neil Druckmann
The “Lost Levels” will be an excellent way to allow fans to go even further into the universe of The Last Of Us. It will be an opportunity to listen to the words of Neil Druckmann, Haley Gross, but also the actors Troy Baker (Joel), Ashley Johnson (Ellie) and Laura Bailey (Abby) reveal secrets and anecdotes from filming.
The exchange ends around the second season of the series The Last Of Us on HBO which will be Naughty Dog’s next big project following the release of The Last Of Us Part.II Remastered. The start of filming is scheduled for February 2024 and should last until the end of September 2024. The release of season 2 would be scheduled for the beginning of 2025.
For Neil Druckmann, adapting Part.II into a series promises to be a big challenge. And diving back into the history of Part.II with the work on the Remastered may have helped him on certain passages.
“The process of working on the remaster had a double research effect, reminding me of certain subtleties of the story, along with the reasons why we made certain decisions. I tend to focus on what we can control: Does the storytelling meet our standards? About things we can’t control [la réaction du public]. With the popularity of the series, I’m sure we’ll get a lot of emotional responses. “It’ll be fun to see people’s reactions to this story for the first or second time in another medium.” – Neil Druckmann
