The final whistle has sounded at Cambuurplein. At least that is the most likely scenario as far as the summer use of the Kooi Stadium is concerned and tonight the old Cambuur Stadium was said goodbye to with many stories, fireworks, singing and also tears. The much-loved Cambuur Stadium, where football has been played for so long and where there is so much football history.
It was an evening full of nostalgia where the players were allowed to play in a special 1964 shirt, supporters received a special match ticket upon arrival and the evening kicked off with an impressive atmosphere campaign. And then we haven’t even mentioned the program following the match, where there were nice words from general director Ard de Graaf and councilor Hein de Haan, all champions completed a final lap of honor and who else than Anneke Douma ended the evening was allowed to close with ‘t Woanskip one more time from the center spot.
All this beauty did not even result in the most impressive minute of the evening, because for many it took place in the twelfth minute of the match. The names of hundreds of deceased Cambuur supporters were displayed on the LED Boarding and they were honored with thunderous applause. Those who helped create the club and can no longer move to the new stadium.
The unplanned storming of the field at the very end, also typical of the Cambuur folk club, was not completely planned and therefore actually completely appropriate. A dazzling fireworks show ended an unprecedented evening, during which tears flowed and a final salute of honor was given at Cambuurplein. It You’ll never walk alone that sounded during the interruption due to a large number of torches being lit in the North Stand has rarely sounded louder and more beautiful than tonight. Literally the entire stadium sang along and there were goosebumps everywhere.
Was there also football played? Yep, none of that really mattered at all on this historic evening. However, the Woanskip was allowed to sound once when Roberts Uldrikis headed home a cross from the strong playing Thomas Poll.
However, it would not be a three-point goal at the Cambuur Stadium, because Helmond Sport kept pushing and was rewarded for work regarding fifteen minutes before the end. It was Lorentzen who shot high and hard into Van Osch’s goal from a free kick in the depth.
Despite the insistence of the Leeuwarders dressed in blue and yellow, who really did everything they might to end the last match at Cambuurplein in a winning manner, it would remain a draw and Roberts Uldrikis will go down in the history books as the last goalscorer ever at Cambuurplein.
