Two days ago, the Lebanese parliament failed, for the 12th time in a row, to elect a president for the Lebanese Republic.
During the counting of the voting results, former minister Suleiman Franjieh received 51 votes, former minister Jihad Azour got 59 votes, and 7 votes were recorded for former interior minister Ziyad Baroud.
The 12th session of the Lebanese Parliament began, on Wednesday, to elect the President of the Republic for the first time, in the presence of all the representatives (128 deputies).
According to reports, it was noted that a number of deputies began to leave the session immediately following casting their vote in the first round of voting, that is, without waiting for the result of the sorting, “indicating the trend towards the quorum of the session being blown before reaching the second round of voting,” according to media reports.
And following the failure of the Lebanese parliament to elect a president for the republic, Berri confirmed that this electoral process in Lebanon will only be achieved through consensus and the path of dialogue.
Berri said, “Enough throwing the blame on this or that party for prolonging the vacuum, and let us all admit that we will not reach the desired result by dwelling on this behavior.”
He stressed that “accelerating the election of a president for the republic will only be achieved by consensus and by following the path of dialogue…then dialogue…then dialogue,” adding: “Yes, dialogue without conditions, that does not cancel anyone’s right to run. A dialogue in which everyone’s wills intersect over a common vision of how Achieving this entitlement without exclusion, isolation, challenge or betrayal. Dialogue under the roof of the constitution that preserves the pact and partnership.
Berri added, “The time has come for everyone to have the audacity and courage for Lebanon, by taking this path, so are we effective?”
And the head of the Free Patriotic Movement, Representative Gebran Bassil, previously said that “in the election of the presidency, we said neither opposition nor confrontation, and we rejected the binary option and the opposition option, but in the elections we must choose one of the candidates,” stressing that “our will is not to break the understanding with the party God. There is no president except by agreement.
Basil’s words came two days following a press conference for the head of the Marada Movement and Lebanese presidential candidate Suleiman Franjieh, in which he stressed that the time has come to “reassure Christians that their partner in the homeland does not want to cancel them,” and that “the Christian national project today exists and is stronger than ever.”
Hezbollah previously announced its support for Franjieh in the Lebanese presidential elections, stressing that it seriously wants to elect a president categorically, and does not want a vacuum, and “this is the definite national interest.”
On June 3, the Lebanese “opposition” forces and the “Free Patriotic Movement” officially announced their “interruption” over the candidacy of former minister Jihad Azour for the presidency.
