The American company Tesla intends to transform its factory in the German capital, Berlin, into the largest car factory in Europe.
Tesla has applied to double the production capacity of its factory near Berlin to one million electric cars annually, according to the “Tesla” network.CNN“, Friday.
The company also wants to use the plant, which is located regarding 30 km southeast of the German capital, to make more battery cells.
If Tesla’s request is approved, the Gigafactory will be able to produce battery storage capacity of “100 GWh” per year, up from “50 GWh” currently.
The expansion of the Tesla factory, where it produced its first car in March last year, means it will overtake Volkswagen’s sprawling plant in Wolfsburg, Germany, which is now the largest car factory in Europe.
The expansion may also mean that Tesla will enter into a fierce competition with Volkswagen, which is the largest automaker in Europe, for a larger slice of the global electric car market.
Volkswagen sold 572,000 electric cars last year, far short of Tesla’s 1.31 million deliveries.
The Chinese company BYD, in which the American billionaire invests, Warren Buffett, is ahead of both if hybrid cars are also counted.
It is reported that the largest Tesla factory outside the United States is located in Shanghai. In 2022, more than half of the vehicles delivered by Tesla will be built in China.
