The Enns elementary school was built in 1858, and now the largest elementary school in Upper Austria shines in new splendor. The starting signal for the general renovation, which was completed in autumn 2022, was fired in 2013 and was carried out in several stages while the school continued to operate.
A total of around 10.4 million euros was invested in the conversion, the lion’s share of which was borne by the municipality itself (around 5.4 million euros). 21 classes and two German remedial classes with a total of 506 students are taught by 48 teachers in the new school. The plans go back to architect Herwig Gruber.

The official opening was celebrated last week. “After the completion of all work, our elementary school meets the highest demands of modern pedagogy and offers a perfect environment for our students and teachers”, the joy was not only great for the mayor of Enns, Christian Deleja-Hotko (SP).
Historical appearance, modern pedagogy
“We invest where the future of the state is decided – with our youngest ones,” said Christine Haberlander (VP), Deputy Governor for Education, enthusiastically. “With the modernization of the elementary school in Enns, we are setting another building block in our endeavor to make Upper Austria the No. 1 children’s area.”
“Thanks to careful planning, it has been possible to preserve the historical appearance and at the same time to create a modern and inspiring learning and teaching environment. The elementary school is thus a symbol of the city of Enns, which, as the oldest city in Austria, maintains its historical heritage without forget to invest in the future and keep developing,” said municipal councilor Michael Lindner (SP).
Headmaster Regina Oberreiter and her team are also proud of the successful project. “The main task of all committed educators is the educational mandate to support and challenge our students in the best possible way. The successful conversion enables this challenging and beautiful task to be implemented at the Enns site at the highest level,” said the director.
