Elio Di Rupo was the guest on the show Face à Buxant. The socialist published a book on January 23 entitled “The labyrinth of power”. In his work, the Walloon Minister-President looks back on the storm he faced in 1996 during the Trusgnach affair.

Martin Buxant: For the first time, you are speaking out on the Trusgnach affair. If you had to explain this matter to young people. What would you say?

Elio Di Rupo: It’s a state affair. It was at the police level at the time. Some police officers, because you shouldn’t put everyone in the same bag. They are building a case once morest me. A cabal, saying that I was a pedophile at the time of the Dutroux affair. It took on unimaginable dimensions. I was deputy prime minister. Fortunately, I very quickly received testimonies which showed that the person who accused me was only responding to requests from the police. I had never seen this boy. I don’t know this boy. And fortunately, gradually, I was able to get out of it. I was whitewashed everywhere. But we had to fight. It took two to two and a half years of investigation to complete the case.

Martin Buxant: It shows the resilience in the journey.

Elio Di Rupo: Yes, but also the relentlessness in judicial circles of some, because there are people of very high quality. And it really took a lot of resilience. But I also found great support and people on that occasion. Because when we are attacked like that, we realize that there are people of great quality and then there are people who are not worth it.
