Component of the small group that survived the irrational devastation to which the species was subjected in the last century, construction work on the La Lobería Fauna Interpretation Center began at the end of January 1979. The place, which had been incorporated as one more option to the attractive possibilities offered by the tourist circuit with direct influence on the Rio Negro capital, which begins at the mouth of the Negro River and at the sea and extends to the so-called Caleta de los Loros, 150 km to the south, began to have this project with a new element that would contribute to perfecting and increasing the visitor’s knowledge through the enriching experience that – going beyond mere and passive observation – would serve to extend the conservationist need. that the provincial faunal heritage requires. The aim was for the result to have an important impact, for its product to fulfill an educational and motivating function with the activities that would be developed there.

It must be remembered that this regional attraction, made up of a colony of wolves, which at the time the project was announced, had a number of more than 1,200 specimens sheltered at the foot of the typical Patagonian cornice, was declared a provincial tourist reserve with a protection regime of the area and adjacency of the so-called Punta Bermeja (or Playa Bonita), regarding 10 km north of La Lobería, all under decree 898/71, which “declares the Punta Bermeja sea lion rookery a Provincial Fauna Reserve, and to the area in which it is found”, with the aim of conserving a sector of the coast that had an important colony of these specimens.

The 200 square meters in which construction began were intended to be a space that would allow “apprehending” the characteristics and habits of a species that, belonging to the genus of pinnipeds (from the Latin pinna or fin and from the Greek pous , foot) includes walruses, seals and otarians.

The Interpretation Center has the function of increasing the visitor’s knowledge of La Lobería, but on the other hand, it was at that time the second to be built in the country, with 280 square meters closed towards the plateau and open towards the sea. It would have a parking area, a lobby, exhibition room, projection room, bar, terrace on the different levels, a sidewalk that would lead to the already built viewpoint, administrative office, warehouses, toilets and facilities for the manager.
