The Kremlin urges Washington to stop stoking tensions in Ukraine

The Kremlin urged the United States to “stop” the escalation of the crisis between Russia and the West over Ukraine, a day following the US decision to send an additional 3,000 military personnel to support NATO forces in Eastern Europe, according to Agence France-Presse.

“We constantly appeal to our American partners to stop fueling tension,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

And he considered that “Russia’s fears are clear and fully justified,” noting that “the Americans are the ones who are sent to European countries.”

Yesterday, the Russian Foreign Ministry considered the announcement of sending US reinforcements as “devastating.”

The Russians and the Westerners are holding talks in a variety of formats. Each of the parties expresses its intention to reduce the escalation, but both adhere to their principled positions.

Moscow has deployed tens of thousands of troops for months at the borders of Ukraine, which the West considers an indication of the possibility of a large-scale military operation. Russia denies this.

For its part, the Kremlin says that NATO threatens Russia’s security and demands, in order to ease tensions, a halt to the alliance’s expansion and withdrawal from Eastern Europe, which the Europeans and Americans reject.
