Koudia Al Baida went from an initial capacity of 50 MW, commissioned in 2000 by ONEE, to a capacity doubled to 100 MW thanks to repowering.

Performance: Somalev has just announced the success of the assembly phase of 20 100 MW wind turbines as part of the project to strengthen the Koudia Al Baida wind power plant. Located in the Tangier-Tetouan region, this park has now doubled its power.

The Koudia Al Baida wind farm has reached a new milestone by doubling its capacity. “In collaboration with Masen (Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy) and EDF Renewables, this repowering project was financed thanks to commercial loans obtained from renowned institutions such as Attijariwafa bank, the Banque centrale populaire, Bank of Africa, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and Société Générale France. The total financing of this project, amounting to 130 million euros, including 48.5 million euros co-financed by the EBRD, was crowned with success,” explains Somalev in a press release. And to specify: “Koudia Al Baida, the first wind farm in Morocco and the entire African continent, went from an initial capacity of 50 MW, commissioned in 2000 by ONEE, to a doubled capacity of 100 MW thanks to repowering.

This project also marks the first wind repowering operation in Africa and for the EBRD. As the same source explains, the production of renewable energy generated by the 20 new wind turbines, with an individual output capacity of 5 MW, will contribute to an estimated reduction of 300,000 tonnes per year of CO2 emissions in the region, according to EBRD reports. As a partner company in this project, Somalev explains that it “consolidates its reputation as an undisputed leader in the wind industry in Morocco and strengthens its contribution to national renewable energy objectives”.
