As the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions embarks on a two-week general strike, it is expected that the labor world’s ‘Hatu’ will begin in earnest.
The National Confederation of Democratic Trade Unions held a press conference today (3rd) at 10 am in front of the Presidential Office in Yongsan-gu, Seoul and declared a general strike, saying, “1.2 million members of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions must unite to drive out the Yoon Seok-yeol regime and create a labor-centered democratic society.” .
The key agenda of the general strike, the KCTU, is to stop suppression of labor unions and revise Articles 2 and 3 of the Labor Union Act, to stop dumping Japanese nuclear-contaminated water into the sea, to raise the minimum wage and guarantee living wages, to withdraw from privatization and public utility rate hikes, and to strengthen state responsibility. ·Expansion of public care △Abolishment of working hours from death from overwork △Strengthening punishment for serious accidents △Guarantee of freedom of speech and assembly/demonstration were presented.
The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) plans to go on strike in turn in each industry union until the 15th, hold simultaneous candlelight vigils across the country, and weekday and weekend rallies.
In addition, on the 4th, 7th, 11th, and 14th at 7:00 pm, we plan to hold candlelight vigils by city and province across the country demanding the resignation of the Yoon Seok-yeol regime.
Meanwhile, the government and six economic organizations called for an end to the strike, calling the KCTU’s general strike “obviously illegal.”
Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Lee Chang-yang and the vice presidents of six economic organizations, including the Korea Employers Federation, the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Federation of Korean Industries, the Federation of Small and Medium Business, and the Korea Federation of Mid-sized Enterprises, held an emergency meeting today at the Seoul Government Complex and made the announcement.
In a joint statement, the six economic organizations criticized, “The KCTU’s ‘resignation of the government and the prevention of the discharge of contaminated water in Fukushima’, which were put forward in this general strike, are illegal political strikes that have lost their legitimacy due to political demands.”
He also insisted on the government, “We must respond with a zero-tolerance principle to violence, violations of police lines, and illegal occupations that occur during this general strike assembly.”
