World-renowned a cappella ensemble The King’s Singers is set to captivate audiences at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12, performing live in the prestigious Center for Faith and Life Main Hall as a highlight of Luther College’s exciting 2024–25 Center Stage Series.
For more than 50 years, The King’s Singers have consistently raised the bar for a cappella music, gracing concert halls across the globe with their extraordinary performances. They are celebrated for their impeccable technique, unparalleled musicianship, and remarkable versatility across various genres. It’s noteworthy that their previous performance at Luther College occurred back in 1994, making this a highly anticipated return.
Their upcoming concert, titled “The New World,” promises to take attendees on a musical journey that delves into the deep connections between the rich musical traditions of Iberia and South America. The thoughtfully curated program not only highlights the magnificent European Renaissance music brought to the Americas by conquistadors but also pays homage to the indigenous musical traditions that flourished long before. This fusion of diverse musical heritages laid the groundwork for the vibrant landscape of South American music we cherish today.
“Audiences of all ages will delight in the harmonious beauty and precision with which The King’s Singers perform,” remarked Susan Potvin, director of programming and outreach. “Bring a friend or two and enjoy an unforgettable evening filled with extraordinary music.”
The King’s Singers originated in 1968 when six talented choral scholars from King’s College, Cambridge, came together for a concert at London’s iconic Queen Elizabeth Hall. The group serendipitously consisted of two countertenors, a tenor, two baritones, and a bass, and they have maintained this distinctive lineup ever since. Currently, the ensemble includes the accomplished singers: Patrick Dunachie (countertenor), Edward Button (countertenor), Julian Gregory (tenor), Christopher Bruerton (baritone), Nick Ashby (baritone), and Jonathan Howard (bass).
Their esteemed discography boasts not only two Grammy Awards and an Emmy Award but also a coveted position in Gramophone magazine’s prestigious Hall of Fame. The King’s Singers have made a significant impact on the global music scene.
In addition to their rigorous schedule of over 100 concerts worldwide each season, the group is also dedicated to fostering musical growth through educational workshops, collaborating with both ensembles and individuals to enhance their group singing techniques.
Starting at 7 p.m., audiences can also enjoy a performance by Undeclared Acapella, Luther’s student-led tenor-bass contemporary a cappella group, which will perform in the CFL lobby, providing a lively prelude to the main event.
This highly-anticipated performance is proudly sponsored by Minnesota Public Radio.
