On November 19, 2023 at 8:30 p.m., the film The Kings of the world by Colombian director Laura Mora will be screened at Cinémas Grütli, as part of the festival Filming in Latin America. This co-production between Colombia, Luxembourg, France, Mexico and Norway won the Golden Shell at the 70th San Sebastian Festival.
Un road movie tropical
This tropical road movie tells the story of five teenagers, Culebro, Nano, Rá, Sere and Winny, who live on the streets of Medellín. The group leaves the city and goes deep into the Colombian jungle in search of land that Rá inherited from his grandmother. Throughout their journey, the friends meet different characters who help them in their search, while warning them of the dangers that await them.
The Kings of the world reveals very realistic characters, played by non-professional actors, who evolve in a world that is both real and hallucinated. The film explores themes of marginality, social justice and the search for a place in the world through a narrative style close to magical realism.
Although violence is also a recurring topic throughout the film, it is more suggested than explicit. With the exception of the old man who welcomes the teenagers, all the male characters are marked by violence. The female characters represent tenderness, gentleness, understanding, motherhood.
The phantasmagorical journey of these adolescents follows a chronology that is sometimes floating, foggy, incongruous, as if time, crossed by delirium and imagination, was losing its transcendence. In certain scenes, for example when the friends are traveling in a truck, the ambient sound transforms into an omnipresent drone which reinforces the muffled and dreamlike atmosphere.
In the opening sequence, we see a white horse in the middle of a deserted street. This horse reappears several times and accompanies the group of friends until the end of their quest. In many cultures, the white horse is the mount of heroes but it also symbolizes belonging to the world of the dead.
Magnificent camera work
Photography, under the direction of David Gallego, constitutes one of the most salient aspects of the film. The camera that follows the group of teenagers on their journey seems to become a creature in its own right. Affected by the same emotions as the characters, she is quick and energetic when they become agitated, while she becomes calm and attentive when the group calms down.
In certain scenes, like the one where Culebro steals the group’s supplies, the camera chooses to be discreet to show the action from afar and emphasize the space in which the characters operate. The use of these long shots is found at several moments in the film and contributes to its lyricism. In the final scene, the camera is no longer focused on the action at all. This only becomes understandable through sound.
