Vatican City – King Abdullah II of Jordan and Pope Francis discussed, yesterday, Thursday, the “dangerous” developments in Gaza and the consequences of violating sanctities in Jerusalem.
This came during their meeting at the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican, according to a statement from the Royal Court, a copy of which Anatolia received.
The statement stated that King Abdullah stressed “Jordan’s continuation of its religious and historical role in protecting and caring for the Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, based on the Hashemite custodianship over them.”
Jordan retained its right to supervise religious affairs in Jerusalem under the “Wadi Araba” peace agreement, which it signed with Israel in 1994.
In March 2013, King Abdullah and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas signed an agreement giving the Kingdom the right to “custodianship and defense of Jerusalem and the holy sites” in Palestine.
King Abdullah stressed “the need to stop the escalating settler attacks once morest the people in Al-Quds Al-Sharif, and in the villages and cities of the West Bank.”
He warned of “the consequences of continued Israeli violations of holy sites in Jerusalem.”
The meeting discussed the “dangerous developments” in Gaza, as the King of Jordan warned that “the humanitarian catastrophe in the Strip requires immediate action to stop it, reach a permanent ceasefire, and ensure the delivery of relief aid in sufficient quantities, by all possible means without objection or delay.”
He reiterated the need for the international community to continue supporting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), so that it can carry out its humanitarian role within its UN mandate.
He pointed out that “there is no alternative to finding a political horizon to achieve a just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution (Palestinian and Israeli) that guarantees the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, along the lines of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.”
On Wednesday, the King of Jordan began a foreign tour of unannounced duration, including Italy and the United States, to discuss the war on Gaza.
