The ‘Khitan War of Goryeo’ is full of scars. What’s left if only scratches are made?

The original author’s revelations and the director’s and writer’s rebuttals regarding the ‘Goryeo Khitan War’ continue. Isn’t it the ‘Khitan War of Goryeo’ that causes more harm than good? It is a time when healthy criticism and perspectives are needed to view the original work as it was written and the drama as it is a drama.

KBS2’s epic drama ‘Goryeo Khitan War’ (written by Lee Jeong-woo, directed by Jeon Woo-sung, Kim Han-sol, and Seo Yong-su), a special project for the public broadcaster’s 50th anniversary, is full of scars following its 16th episode. It was running well on horseback, but it was in danger of collapsing as the original author’s criticism and revelations, and viewers’ comments continued. Episode 16 climaxed with Yang Gyu (Ji Seung-hyun) and Kim Sook-heung (Joo Yeon-woo) fighting a fierce battle while rescuing prisoners from the Khitan army, but later, in the process of destroying the noble power, some of the devices used to maximize the situation are different from historical research. This is because the claim was raised between Gil Seung-soo, writer of ‘The Chronicles of the Goryeo Khitan’, and some viewers.

Author Gil Seung-su is pouring out his voice of criticism for the fact that ‘Goryeo Khitan War’ does not follow the ‘Goryeo Khitan Biography’. He said, “I should have been fully aware of the historical facts and received sufficient advice before writing the script, but I don’t think I was fully familiar with them. After the script writer was replaced, I did not receive any advice except for the battle scenes, so I do not know the exact internal situation. It seems that the script writer is deliberately trying to avoid the original work and write his own work. As he tries to avoid the original work, it is thought that he is also avoiding the history within it. “I can’t believe a person like this is writing a historical drama for the public broadcaster KBS,” he said, criticizing writer Lee Jeong-woo, who wrote the script.

In particular, “I explained Hyeonjong’s character well to the production team, but in the end, the script writer used it however he wanted and this led to this failure. They are making a fool out of someone who can be considered the most famous soldier in Korean history. The KBS original contract was not only for the published ‘Goryeo Khitan War: Heroes of Goryeo’, but also for ‘Goryo Khitan War: Battle of Europe and China’, which is currently being written. ‘Goryeo Khitan War: Battle of Europe and China’ was provided to KBS with regarding 400 pages and contains the post-war recovery following Yang Gyu’s death. “I hope that the drama will soon escape from being third-rate,” he said.

The ‘Goryeo Khitan War’ side emphasized that writer Seung-su Gil’s ‘Biography of the Goryeo Khitan’ and the drama ‘Goryeo Khitan War’ are separate works. According to what director Jeon Woo-sung said through KBS, in order to make a drama regarding Goryeo, which has significantly fewer records remaining in history than Joseon, a story was needed to bridge the gap between major events, and in the case of dramas, it is another creation with a unique scope. Therefore, the production team is implementing a story unique to the ‘Goryeo Khitan War’ that maximizes the situation and elicits emotion without harming history.

It is not that the original work is completely ignored. Director Jeon Woo-sung signed a copyright acquisition and advisory contract in the first half of 2022, and later referenced the details of the war scenes and battle scenes that appear in the drama from ‘Biography of the Goryeo Khitan’ during the production process. As ‘Goryeo Khitan Biography’ is also a work that contains rich details of battle situations rather than narrative of the story, the war and battle scenes in ‘Goryeo Khitan War’ were expressed more vividly and received rave reviews.

Director Jeon Woo-sung also said, “There are many different types of original drama contracts. They range from remakes that follow the settings and plot of the original to contracts to use the ideas of the original. In the case of the original contract for ‘Goryeo Khitan War’, it was not a contract for a remake or partial adaptation. “In order to vividly recreate the necessary battle scenes, we signed an original work and consulting contract with writer Gil Seung-soo, and we used them well for some of the battle scenes in the play,” he admitted.

Director Jeon Woo-sung revealed that he had asked writer Gil Seung-soo for advice several times. According to him, when writer Lee Jeong-woo started writing the script, he refused advice on historical research on the grounds that ‘the direction of storytelling is different’ from his novel, and eventually he declined. Accordingly, the ‘Khitan War of Goryeo’ side has selected a new advisor and is writing and producing it following conducting meticulous research. In this process, the claim that devices to maximize the situation are being produced without basic historical research is puzzling.

Accordingly, director Jeon Woo-sung and writer Lee Jeong-woo asked writer Gil Seung-soo to respect each other. Director Jeon Woo-sung said, “I can’t even agree with him talking as if he is the only expert in this field. “The advisors for this drama are people who majored in history and have studied history their entire lives,” he said emphatically. Writer Lee Jeong-woo also said, “If he has pride in his own writing, he should also have respect for the writing of other writers. It is clearly an action that has crossed the line for the original novelist to criticize me by talking regarding my qualifications. How to structure and lead the drama is the responsibility of the drama writer, and I am responsible for both glory and shame. “I should be evaluated for my dramas, and novelists should be evaluated for their novels,” he emphasized.

‘The Goryeo Khitan War’, which shows the power of a historical drama by recording the highest viewership rating of 10.2%, is causing internal conflict right following the Khitan army retreats. The situation of the drama and the conflict of opinions between the original author and the production team surrounding the work do not seem to be much different. If we make flaws in this process without respect for each other, what will remain of the ‘Khitan War of Goryeo’? Shouldn’t we view ‘Biography of the Goryeo Khitan’, which specializes in war and battle scenes, as ‘Biography of the Goryeo Khitan’, and ‘Biography of the Goryeo Khitan’, which allows for drama, as ‘The Biography of the Goryeo Khitan’? Should we criticize what needs to be criticized and praise what needs to be praised? This is a time when healthy perspectives and criticism are needed more than anything else. /elnino8919@osen.co.kr
