Balanced meals bring a real gain in life expectancy, even if it is adopted late.
Do you want to gain three years of life expectancy? Nothing’s easier. You just need to change your eating habits, say Norwegian researchers in a study dated November 20 published in the journal Nature Food. It has long been known that a healthy, balanced diet reduces blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and the risk of cancer. But this study goes further, showing that it is possible to live longer, even if you only change your eating habits from the age of 40.
Even more surprising, the benefits of a balanced diet are felt much later in life: at age 70, the gain from a diet becoming more “virtuous” is 1.5 years. The benefits are even clearer for those whose diet is the most unbalanced at age 40. For them, the gain can reach up to ten years of life expectancy!
