The ‘Kathak Union’ dance pays tribute to the Samrat dynasty

Pakistani Kathak dancer Nighat Chaudhry went international on 29th April Dance day To pay tribute to the Samrat family on the occasion of Kathak dance A special video is being released.

Nighat said that he along with his colleagues made a video called ‘Kathak Union’ in which he paid tribute to the Samrat family.

Elaborating further, he said that Ashiq Samrat was very famous before the partition of India, he got the title of Nritya Kala after which he came to Pakistan.

‘The old gurus whom we do not know, who are lost, do not know where they are?

‘His family went into hiding, so me, Wahab Shah and Waqas Samrat, who are from the Samrat family themselves, thought of making a music video.

‘It was a music of the same family composed by Umar Daraz. We will release this video on April 29.

Nighat said that since this day is International Dance Day, what can be better than that to improve the image of Pakistan.

He said that apart from social media, this video will also be aired in Arts Council Karachi.

According to Nighat: ‘Kathak is a form of our classical dance, which is declining in Pakistan. People are underestimating it. We want to revive it.’

She says that in Pakistan, we are closer to Kathak, the reason being that in Kathak there is a Maulana Rum style, there is a Mughal style. Ghazal, Thumri, all our Urdu poetry is found in Kathak.

In the 13th century, Hazrat Amir Khusrau invented the tabla and the sitar. Their Classical Music plays a big part and along with classical music, Kathak is also there.

‘So I think Kathak, being an ancient dance, becomes a true identity of Pakistan.’

It is being celebrated since 1982. This was to draw the attention of governments and institutions to the importance of dance as it is beneficial for physical, mental, spiritual and emotional health.

‘Dance is important but some people have degraded it and caused its decline.’

He said that the classical form takes years to develop. We want to give it a recognition.

“I think the mindset has already improved in Pakistan because social media has given so much exposure in Pakistan that every child is using social media. When kids have a hobby, so do parents.’
