The price of the grocery cart is constantly rising, while Metro announced new increases at the grocery store earlier this week, but are these increases justified?
Certain factors lead to believe that the increase in foodstuffs would not be justified, knowing that the price of raw materials has been falling for a year.
Wheat fell by 47%, corn by 22%, milk by 36%, poultry by 16%, beef by 12%, as well as a barrel of oil by 35%.

However, the price of raw materials and the price of the basket have a weak correlation between the two, according to the specialist in the agri-food industry at Dalhousie University, Sylvain Charlebois. “There are several factors that contribute to higher prices, including labor cost, packaging, transportation, lead times. We are living a global phenomenon!”, he adds.
For citizens, it is becoming more and more difficult to eat well.
“The average basket has increased for 2 years. Now, we are always obliged to reduce!”, launches a citizen.
For some, this increase might become “intolerable”, and even more so for large families. “It’s hard to justify,” insists a passerby.
