The Justice System in 2040: Delayed Trials and Retired Lawyers

2023-12-13 20:49:00

This is a story that illustrates the situation in which our justice system finds itself. A lawyer received a summons to plead a case in 2040. Until then, he will be retired.

Pierre-Philippe Hendrickx is awaiting a decision from a judge in a business dispute case. He received a letter from the Brussels Court of Appeal to schedule the hearing in 2040, more than 16 years from now. The tax lawyer will then be 77 years old. “It won’t be me who pleads“, he smiled. “And the magistrate who will sit may still be at school today. He may not even have started law school yet.

This date of 2040 was set automatically by a computer program and it will be reviewed but, in any case, the trial will not take place before 2030.
