London/Leipzig/sid/ukr – Timo Werner rediscovered the joy of football by moving to Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League. “The fun has completely returned,” said the striker in an interview with Sky. “I have changed a lot as a person, I have become much happier. After five games you can say that the transfer was worth it,” said Werner, who left RB Leipzig in the winter.
The city of London also plays a role: “I lived in London during my time at Chelsea, so you sometimes wonder why you left London in the first place. For me, London is one of the best cities in the world. The whole package gives me a lot of joy and fun.”
Timo Werner: “It didn’t work out in Leipzig in the end”
There is currently little to suggest a return to the DFB Cup winners, although Werner is only on loan to London. There was relatively little exchange between him and coach Marco Rose and sports director Rouven Schröder, said the 27-year-old: “Over the course of the first half of the season, it was clear how the coach thought regarding me and planned with me. That’s why it was relatively easy for me to take this step.”
Werner explained clearly: “Sometimes things no longer fit between people or between tactics and players. This no longer gave me the joy that I had felt for a long time. In the end it didn’t work out in Leipzig. That’s why it was the right step for everyone involved that I go to Tottenham.”
EM was not the main argument for the change
At Spurs, Werner hopes to be recommended for a place in national coach Julian Nagelsmann’s squad at the home European Championship. “The European Championships played a role,” said Werner: “But it wasn’t my main argument. I wanted to find the fun in football once more and play exactly this type of football. In the end, that might lead to me being able to take part in the European Championships.”
The harder pace on the island compared to the Bundesliga might also help the former Stuttgart player: “Not every foul is whistled here. You have to learn to be strong on your feet and, when in doubt, to take an extra step,” said Werner.
Rose is irritated by Werner’s accusations
When asked regarding Werner’s statements, RB coach Marco Rose reacted irritably. “I think I tried very hard for Timo, we had a lot of conversations. Overall we had a good exchange.” The coach emphasized that his office is always open to everyone. Rose gave Werner the advice to be happy “that he is doing really well once more, that he is playing and performing well. We are happy for him.” He told the player, who is still under contract with RB: “Stopping, being humble, correctly assessing your own situation is important. We support him, following all he is one of our players.”
Werner plays as a winger for Tottenham and has already provided two assists. He didn’t get much playing time in Leipzig and scored two goals (no assist). “We’re happy to see how he reacts to his own mistakes in the game, how he runs back, how he contributes to the team,” said Rose. Subtext: Werner missed all of this at RB, where he sometimes seemed downright depressed on and off the pitch. “He should stick with it and keep going and then we’ll see what happens next in the summer.” It is currently extremely unlikely that Werner will return to lawnball sports.
