The internationally renowned astrophysicist and popularizer of science, Hubert Reeves, died on October 13 at the age of 91, his son Benoit Reeves announced on his Facebook page.
Mr. Reeves was born in 1932 in Léry. The City also named him an honorary citizen years later. He made his reputation with his research in astrophysics from the 1960s. His knowledge led him to teach and collaborate with numerous universities, whether here with Montreal and McGill, or abroad in the United States or in Europe. He was even a scientific advisor for NASA in New York.
A popular scientific popularizer, Mr. Reeves has written several works and cinematographic projects.
His career is marked by several distinctions and prizes obtained on both sides of the Atlantic. The International Astronomical Union even named an asteroid in his honor in 1999.
Attached to the Îles-de-la-Paix
Hubert Reeves had given his support to the efforts of the Société d’ménagement du Parc des Îles-de-la-Paix which aimed to save his favorite islands in Beauharnois. Hubert Reeves was attached to this place which rocked his childhood. A film regarding his life was filmed in 2002 by Iolande Cadrin-Rossignol, at this location in Lac Saint-Louis. In his book, I won’t have time, he recounts his youth in what he called “his territory of exploration.”
Mr. Reeves also supported the conservation efforts of the Châteauguay-Léry Green Corridor.
