The Japanese government is discussing with auto companies the future of the industry

Japan’s Kyodo news agency reported on Sunday that Industry Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura said he is looking forward to a meeting next month between the government and chiefs of automakers to discuss the industry’s future.

According to Kyodo, Nishimura told reporters Saturday in California, where he visited research facilities of Toyota Motor Corp., that “the auto industry is entering a period of great transformation.”

The Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry visited the United States to attend the trade negotiations for the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework led by the United States.

“We would like to discuss the early introduction of autonomous driving and measures to promote its widespread use,” Nishimura said.

The agenda of the meeting, which will be joined by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, relevant ministers and leaders of automakers, will include the auto industry’s roles in a carbon-neutral society.

Kishida revealed the idea of ​​the meeting on a June visit to a Toyota plant.
