In the midst of turmoil following showing himself a second time with a weapon in an Instagram Live, Ja Morant risks losing several of his sponsors, including the giant Nike with whom he has just released his first signature shoe. The latter has notably been removed from the equipment manufacturer’s website.
Almost a week following the new Insta video that hit the headlines, and while we are still awaiting the NBA’s sanction once morest Morant, Nike is starting to distance itself from the Grizzlies superstar.
The American giant has just removed Morant’s first signature shoe – the Ja 1 – from its official website (as well as from the application), and its sneakers are therefore no longer available for sale. A first step before cutting ties with Ja or simple suspension while waiting to find out more? We are not going to draw hasty conclusions as long as the results of the survey carried out by the NBA are not published, especially since Nike is known to support its athletes even when they have to face non-sporting controversies. The comma brand had notably supported Morant last March following the episode of the first Insta video, also with a gun in hand.
Nevertheless, the blow of the recurrence should not be appreciated at all on the side of the Nike offices in Oregon, and the withdrawal of Ja products shows that the partnership between Morant and the famous US brand has taken a turn for the worse. Just a few months ago, Nike ended its collaboration with Kyrie Irving following the controversy surrounding the promotion of an anti-Semitic film, a controversy that was not the first associated with Uncle Drew. Ja Morant was the one who had to compensate for the shortfall following the discontinuation of the Kyrie products (which were very successful), instead he too risks seeing his collaboration with Nike stop.
Clearly, this would be a huge waste given its marketing potential…
