The head of the Turkish “Good” party, Meral Aksener, threatened to withdraw from the “table of six” for the opposition parties, considering that the alliance no longer reflects the national will.
The “Good” party refused to present the head of the Republican People’s Party, Kamal Kılıçdaroğlu, as a joint candidate for the six parties, and proposed, in return, to nominate the mayor of Ankara, Mansur Yavaş, or the mayor of Istanbul, Akram Imamoglu, both of whom are from the Republican People’s Party, to compete with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the scheduled presidential elections. On May 14th.
Aksener explained in a press conference that the other five parties did not agree with the candidates put forward by the party to run in the presidential elections, and called on the mayors of the two municipalities to carry out their duties, in a clear call for them to run. Aksener’s statements sparked a storm of division in the Turkish street, between supporters and opponents who considered that they wanted to destroy the unity of the opposition ranks.
Analysts considered that her statements not only caused the division of the table of six, but that they considered her an attempt to divide the Republican People’s Party, by inviting Imamoglu and Yavas to run for the presidency.
In turn, Imamoglu said, “The table of six is not a table of discrimination, and there should be no one less than one, as it is made up of 6 equal parties, and if insight is needed to overcome this problem, then our President Kemal Kilicdaroglu and very dear Meral Aksener They have this foresight, and they will fix this process.” Akshinar did not announce her withdrawal from the “Table of Six”, but observers unanimously agreed that her sharp statements meant her separation from her.
For his part, Kılıçdaroğlu only responded with one sentence to Aksınar’s statements, saying: “All stones will settle in place.” He also drew attention when he went to a photography studio in Ankara on Friday morning. Where new photos were taken of him, indicating his readiness to launch his campaign for the presidency.
