In the first quarter of 2023, the share of smartphones sold at $500 or more was 31%. Predictably, it was the Apple models that led the way, but quite unexpectedly it was the next-gen Pro Max version that took the top spot.

Yes, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is the best-selling smartphone starting at $500 in the first quarter of 2023. The Pro version takes second place, while the classic iPhone 14 completes the top three. The iPhone 13, which held the top spot a year ago, is now in fourth place, well behind the top three.

Samsung’s first smartphone, the Galaxy S23 Ultra, only comes in 5th place. The standard edition finishes two places lower, and the Plus version another two places lower. Between the Galaxy S23 Ultra and the Galaxy S23 is the iPhone 14 Plus, while between the Galaxy S23 and the Galaxy S23+ is the iPhone 12, which was introduced in 2020.
The Top 10 is completed by the Samsung Galaxy Flip 4, which managed to beat the third generation iPhone SE. The latter was more popular than the Samsung Galaxy S22. The Xiaomi 13, Huawei Mate 50, and Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G are also on the list of top 15 best-selling smartphones in early 2023.
Looking at the segment as a whole, it’s interesting to note that it grew 4.7% year-over-year. This is a good indicator considering that the global smartphone market fell by 13.3% in one go during the reporting period.
