The latest generation Apple smartphones are particularly capable in terms of photography, not only because they have extremely powerful sensors, but they also benefit from cutting-edge image processing. They thus rank among the best smartphones in the world, according to the DxOMarK ranking. Let’s see in detail what the configurations are and why they were appreciated.
Let us recall the range of latest generation smartphones from Apple which is made up of the iPhone 15, the iPhone 15 Plus, the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Concerning their technical configurations in terms of photo sensors, they work in pairs. Indeed, the iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Plus have strictly identical modules. In this case, they feature an optically stabilized 48-megapixel main photo sensor accompanied by a 12-megapixel sensor which allows 2x optical zooming, therefore without loss. According to ranking established by the independent laboratory DxOMarkthey both got a score of 145.
In addition to the quality of the sensors, we can also count on image processing provided by the processor which is, again, identical between the two models. They were praised for the vibrant brightness and contrast for photos and videos when viewed on an HDR display. Colors and skin tones are very pleasant and natural, especially in bright light for both photos and videos. The depth of the shots is precise and the details are very fine, especially in portrait mode. There is very little noise in video mode and the video stabilization was found to be very effective. The Laboratory appreciated the fluidity of the zoom.
The photos are however not perfect since a fairly high level of noise was noted especially in the shadows and the zoom capabilities are limited, particularly more than the Pro models. Finally, note that some artifacts, notably reflections, were observed during low light conditions.
What assessments for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max?
For their part, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max offer an almost identical configuration. Indeed, the two Apple models feature a 48-megapixel optically stabilized main sensor as well as a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle sensor. Both devices are also equipped with a 12-megapixel telephoto sensor allowing 2x optical zoom. The difference between the two models is at the level of the fourth sensor which is an optically stabilized 12 megapixel telephoto lens capable of zooming 3x for the Pro model while it is capable of zooming 5x for the Pro Max model. Despite this difference, the two phones were awarded the same score by the DxOMark laboratory, namely 154.
Both phones were also appreciated for their brightness and contrast rendered when viewing photos on an HDR screen. The exposure was found to be accurate even for night shots. Color rendering and skin tones look nice and natural under bright light. Additionally, they offer excellent details. The autofocus is very fast and precise. Finally, video stabilization was considered effective.
Finally, they seem to suffer from the same small defects as the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus versions given that the laboratory noted noise in low light photos as well as unwanted artifacts on certain shots taken.
