The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has announced that it has formally requested the expertise of Belgium, France, South Africa and the UN mission in the DRC (Monusco) in the investigation into the assassination of opposition MP Chérubin Okende Senga, which has added to political tension a few months before the elections, the Kinshasa press reported on Sunday.
“The Prime Minister, Head of Government (Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge, Editor’s note) also informed the members of the Council (of Ministers) in execution of the instructions of the President of the Republic (Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, Editor’s note) concerning the investigation into the assassination of the Honorable Chérubin Okende and without prejudice to the independence of justice, the government has taken the necessary steps to seek the expertise of Belgium, France, the Republic of South- African Union and Monusco”, reports the minutes of the 105th meeting of the Council of Ministers held on Friday July 21, 2023, indicated the online information site Actualité.cd.
“This participatory approach is desired by the government to ensure the transparency and viability of the conclusions of the investigation in the search for light on the circumstances of the death of the Honorable Chérubin Okende on the eve of the organization of the Games of La Francophonie and in this pre-election period”, continues the report of the Council of Ministers, read by the Minister of Communication and government spokesman Patrick Muyaya Katembwe.
