The Invasion of Tiger Mosquitoes in Burgundy: How to Protect Yourself and Your Home

It comes from the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, but arrived in Burgundy two years ago. The tiger mosquito, attracted by very dense urban areas, has invaded homes and gardens in Côte-d’Or, particularly in Beaune and Dijon. Individuals can’t take it anymore.

It’s a particularly unpleasant feeling. You are quietly installed in your garden or on your balcony and you feel a part of your body that itches irrepressibly. You have just been bitten by a mosquito. And if you live in Dijon or Beaune (Côte-d’Or), there is a chance that you have even suffered a tiger mosquito attack.

A real invasion, as Michelle Rebillard notes. Every summer and fall for the past two years, the insect native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia has proliferated in his garden. Impossible to enjoy it with your grandchildren.

“Before, I had a deck chair, it was very pleasant. But this year, I had to use it twice to eat. It’s ruining our lives because we would like to enjoy the garden, our retirement and We’re locked in our house.”

Same case with this individual. He can’t take it anymore. The black and white striped insect, smaller and silent than the other species of mosquito present in the region, plagues its home in Dijon every day. This Thursday, September 21, he called on a pest control company.

“The tiger mosquito’s nesting site is between 150 and 200 meters. We have a capture system that works very well. It allows mosquitoes to be caught with CO2 and pheromones. The CO2 will imitate inspiration and the exhalation of the human and the pheromones will attract the mosquito. It will enter the box and will be captured.”describes Romain Schoendorf, technician at DKM experts.

Price of the intervention: between 130 and 300 euros. But it is only recommended as a last resort. To avoid bites, it is better to use mosquito nets and long clothing. It is also necessary to flush out stagnant water. They are what attract the insect which is mainly found in urban and peri-urban areas.

“For example, we have to put the watering cans upside down, remove the children’s games because they are hollow and will retain the water. Everywhere they remove this stagnant water so that the eggs cannot develop”advises Françoise Tenenbaum, vice-president of Dijon metropolis responsible for health.

The tiger mosquito bite is benign in most cases. It disappears following a few days. It can still transmit serious viral diseases such as dengue, zika or chikungunya.

This Wednesday, September 27, a public meeting will be organized in Dijon to explain to residents the right actions to protect themselves from the tiger mosquito and prevent its proliferation.
