The new, state-of-the-art Waste Treatment Unit (WTP) of Viotia, an investment of €17.4 million, which has the capacity to process 42,000 tons of waste per year, was handed over on Thursday, February 22, 2024, to the Solid Waste Management Agency (FODSA) of Central Greece SA, the Intrakat – Watt joint venture, thus contributing to the implementation of the circular economy in the country and the realization of the objectives of the National Waste Management Plan.

It is a Waste Treatment Unit (WTP), which utilizes state-of-the-art technologies and will serve all the green and blue bins of the Municipality of Thebes, as well as the wider region, marking, in fact, the first relevant investment in the Region of Central Greece.

MEA technologies utilize mechanical screening, composting and a fully automated process, using modern equipment. At the same time, MEA produces electricity by burning the produced biogas.

MEA’s recovered and produced materials are paper, cardboard, plastic film, plastics (PE, PP, PET, mixed plastics), ferrous metals, aluminum and compost-type material. The objectives of the MEA are that the residue to be buried is less than 36.5% of the incoming waste, that the recovery of recyclables is done at a rate greater than 30% of the incoming recyclables and that the diversion of biodegradables from landfill is achieved at a rate greater than 70%.
