“The IIHF Council reviewed the current security risks associated with the reintegration of national and club teams of Russia and Belarus into IIHF competitions. Based on a thorough analysis, the council came to the conclusion that the return of the Russian and Belarusian national teams to IIHF competitions is not yet safe, therefore these teams will not take part in the 2024/25 season,” the statement said.

“The decision will also apply to the exclusion of the Belarusian national team from the final round of qualification for the 2026 Olympic Games, which will take place in August 2024. As before, the IIHF will continue to monitor the situation. A new discussion on the inclusion of Russia and Belarus in tournaments under the auspices of the IIHF in the 2025/26 season will take place in May 2025 at a meeting of the IIHF Council,” the federation said in a statement.

In February 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended that international federations not allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in competitions due to the situation in Ukraine. The national teams of Russia and Belarus, by decision of the IIHF, following the recommendations of the IOC, missed the 2022 and 2023 world championships, and will also not compete at the 2024 world championship in the Czech Republic.
