[이데일리 스타in 주영로 기자] The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) also joined in the expulsion of Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.

FIBA announced on its website on the 2nd (Korean time) that “Russia cannot participate in FIBA tournaments, including 3-on-3 basketball tournaments, until further notice.”

International sports organizations have continued to expel Russia from the sporting stage by announcing a series of statements restricting Russia’s participation in competitions since the end of February.

Previously, sports organizations such as soccer, track and field, gymnastics, and ice skating banned Russian athletes from participating in competitions.

This is happening even faster following the International Olympic Committee (IOC) advised the International Federations (IFs) and the organizers of various sports events on the 28th of last month not to invite or participate in international competitions by Russian or Belarusian athletes and officials.

As a result of the sanctions, Russia’s women’s basketball team has qualified for the 2022 FIBA Women’s World Cup, which will be held in Australia from September 22 to October 1 this year, but has not been able to participate. Also, in the World Cup draw scheduled for the 3rd, the name of Port Russia was removed and changed to TBD (To Be Determined). Russia is ranked 14th in the world for men’s basketball and 12th for women.

The men’s basketball team also had difficulty participating in the remaining schedules for the 2023 Men’s World Cup qualifiers.
