The signing of the contract for the construction of the new 400 kV Overhead Transmission Line that will connect the new Corinth Substation with the Koumoundourou Substation in Attica was held on Tuesday, February 6, at the offices of the Independent Electricity Transmission Operator (ADMIE). The project has a total budget of 77.02 million euros (plus VAT) and the contractor is the consortium of MYTILINEOS-ATERMON companies.
The completion of this project – which is scheduled for the first half of 2026 – will mark the completion of the so-called “Eastern Corridor” (Megalopolis-Corinth-Attica) for the interconnection of the Peloponnese in the Ultra High Voltage System.
The contract was signed by Manos Manousakis, President and CEO of ADMIE, Kostas Chorinos, Executive Director M Power Projects of MYTILINEOS who is the leader of the consortium and Ioannis Samaras, President and CEO of ATERMON.
The new KYT Korinthos-KYT Koumoundours Transmission Line, approximately 86 km long, is a particularly critical project as its operation will drastically increase the electricity transmission capacity between Peloponnese and Attica, which until now are exclusively connected with 150 kV Lines. It will significantly improve voltage stability in the Southern Greek electricity system and enhance security of supply, securing the Peloponnese in any combination of load generation. Finally, it will improve operational security in conditions of increased RES penetration in the Transmission System.
The project of the 400 kV Transmission Line KYT Koumundourou – KYT Corinth is financed by own funds and a grant from European Union resources through the Recovery and Resilience Fund. It is also combined with the project of upgrading the Koumoundouros public transit station (contracted by MYTILINEOS) which will serve the connection of the Eastern Corridor and is also co-financed by the Recovery Fund.
The President and CEO of ADMIE Manos Manousakis stated: “With the new Corinth-Attica ultra-high voltage line entering the construction phase, ADMIE completes the “Eastern Corridor”, a critical electrical infrastructure that definitively resolves the issue of energy security in the Peloponnese. Combined with the “Western Corridor” already in operation, the Peloponnese will now be doubly interconnected at 400 kV, with significant benefits for green energy production possibilities. The project will overall strengthen the terrestrial Transmission System with new, state-of-the-art infrastructures such as the Ultra High Voltage Center in Corinth, which in the coming years will become the starting point for the electrical interconnection of the Dodecanese Islands with mainland Greece.”
Representing her MYTHILINEOSKostas Chorinos, Executive Director M Power Projectsemphasized: «THE MYTHILINEOS following the international trends for efficient transmission and distribution of electricity, invests strategically in the development of networks and undertakes important projects for ADMIE, having already completed the new connecting Greece-Bulgaria Overhead Transmission Line (KYT New Santa-Maritsa East). We are proud to contribute to the Operator’s national effort to develop domestic renewable energy through the upgrading of networks and the electricity market.”
It is noted that the first part of the Eastern Corridor, i.e. the 400 kV Transmission Line between KYT Megalopolis and KYT Corinth was completed in May 2023. Moreover, from the spring of 2023, the “Western Corridor” (Megalopoli-Patra-Acheloos) is in full operation ) which was the first big step for the energy shielding of the Peloponnese.
