The Inter Miami coach accused a reporter who criticized him for his time in Mexico of being disrespectful.
The close of Inter Miami’s season left an unexpected episode in Tata Martino’s conference. The Argentine sat in front of the microphones following his team’s 1-0 loss to Charlotte in the last game of the MLS regular season and in one of the first consultations he was surprised by the journalist’s level of criticism.
“Do you consider Inter Miami’s participation in the tournament a failure? With great stars, they brought you to raise the team not only to compete, because the fans demand that you should be among the first places,” the chronicler snapped and then added a second “query”: “In Mexico they say that the team “He plays better with Jaime Lozano than with you.”
To this, Martino responded: “Uh, you came with everything, with the toe caps tonight. You’re not Mexican, right?” And he proceeded to answer: “If (the Mexican team) plays better, they are welcome and it means that it has been for the better and of course I don’t know if comparisons should be made. What we have to do is support the process that began and make sure it ends in good shape.”
Then, when responding to whether he described as a “failure” that Inter Miami did not qualify for the Playoffs and finished second to last in the Eastern Conference, the former Barcelona and Newell’s coach, among other clubs, said: “It depends on how you do it.” Look”.
It is worth remembering that Martino arrived at the Florida team with the season already started, when more than half of the games had been played, and the team was last. That is why he began a back-and-forth that unfortunately was not fully heard because the journalist no longer had the microphone.
“The changes that occurred, when were they? January February March? Answer me what I am asking you,” Martino asked the chronicler. “From what moment have you been analyzing this? Since the beginning of the year? ”He insisted, raising his voice.
“I ask you a question so you can answer me, otherwise you can speak alone,” Tata attacked the reporter’s refusal to participate in this back and forth, maintaining that the coach was sitting there to answer questions, not to ask them. “If I feel like it, if not I won’t answer you,” said the coach, until he had enough: “Let’s go to another one, you really lack respect for me, for being too big a man.” And he went on to listen to the questions of the rest of the press workers.
In addition, Martino hinted that the players who will not renew their contracts for next season will not travel to the tour of Asia and one of them is the Venezuelan Josef Martínez. This happens while expectations grow for the signing of Luis Suárez for next year.
Inter Miami closed the season without being able to qualify for the MLS playoffs, but also celebrated the first title in its history by winning the Leagues Cup, so it has closed a more than positive year in which its greatest achievement has been the incorporation by Lionel Messi. Now, he will begin a tour of Asia before starting the holidays since MLS 2024 will begin at the end of February.
