“Vornado Realty Trust invited us to partner with them to launch The Cube, a unique historic building at 345 Montgomery Street in the heart of the downtown financial district, for a two-year period beginning this fall,” ICSF wrote in an Instagram post. “Their proposals will pave the way for financial sustainability and fully invest our resources in excellent contemporary art.”
The Cube is a 73,000-square-foot contemporary building designed in 1971 by Skidmore Owings & Merrill and recently redeveloped by the same firm that originally housed Bank of America’s flagship retail branch. It is located adjacent to and downhill from the California 555 entrance plaza, which was originally built as the headquarters of Bank of America and has been vacant for quite some time.

Vornado Real Estate Trust has made the space available to the museum, rent-free and utility-free for two years.
San Francisco Institute of Contemporary Art opens in 2022 at 901 Minnesota Street (formerly the Children’s Gym) with Andy and Deborah Rappaport, the men behind the Minnesota Street project Rappaport and his wife provided $1 million in seed funding.
The museum is not affiliated with other institutions of the same name, such as the Institute of Contemporary Art in San Jose, where ICASF director Alison Gass once worked.
“ICASF has quickly become an important part of San Francisco’s vibrant arts community,” Mayor London Breed said in a statement. “The move to 345 Montgomery Street reflects not only the growth of the institution, but also the city’s commitment to nurturing A vibrant cultural environment and a commitment to revitalizing the downtown landscape.”
Breed’s statement added: “I am excited to see this new chapter unfold and to witness the impact ICASF will continue to have on our communities and beyond.”
