The Montaigne Institute, a liberal think tank, proposes taxing sugary products more. The VAT on these products would increase from 5.5% to 20% and with the money collected, food vouchers would be distributed to the less fortunate so that they can buy fruits and vegetables.

Sweet products benefit from a VAT reduced to 5.5%, like all food products. But the Montaigne Institute, a liberal think tank, would like to tax them at 20%. This would finance a food check of 30 euros per month, which would allow the poorest households to buy fruit and vegetables. This tax, the principle of which should be validated by Europe, would make it possible to eliminate some exceptions. For example, a bar of dark chocolate is taxed at 5.5%, while the same bar of milk chocolate is taxed at 20%.

For nutritionist Professor Boris Hansel, making the sweetest products more expensive has an interest: “The idea is not to prohibit eating fatty, sugary products for pleasure from time to time. The idea is to help people, and in particular those most in difficulty, in a precarious situation, to adjust their diet to focus on fruits and vegetables and reduce these fatty and sugary products.” Reducing the food divide is a public health issue, because one in three French people cannot eat properly every day.
