The head of the FromSoftware studio, Hidetaka Miyazaki, reflected on the development of the company’s games over the past years. In a commentary for the IGN portal, the game director stated that the development of Elden Ring and future projects was largely influenced by Dark Souls II.

“I think Dark Souls II was a great project, without which we would not have had so many connections and ideas that have survived to this day and become the basis for other games. It is unknown in what form and whether the franchise would have continued at all if there had not been Dark Souls II,” Miyazaki noted. The head of FromSoftware also admitted that thanks to Dark Souls II, he began to trust other game designers more when developing games. According to Miyazaki, he is ready to give up control of the team in order to give more freedom to other game designers.

Dark Souls II was released in 2014 and became the first Souls-like game that was not created under the direction of Hidetaka Miyazaki. The heads of development were Tomohiro Shibuya and Yui Tanimura, and the game designer was Naotoshi Jin. Despite the high ratings from both critics and gamers, one can often hear criticism in the community regarding the second part of the Dark Souls series.
