The annual inflation rate in the eurozone – which includes 20 countries – fell in June to 5.5% from 6.1% in May, according to preliminary estimates released by the European Union’s statistics office “Eurostat” on Friday.
Food, alcohol and tobacco prices rose by 11.7% compared to 12.5% in May.
On June 15, the European Central Bank announced that it would raise interest rates by 25 basis points, to the highest level in 22 years. The European Central Bank attributed the rate hike at the time to expectations that the inflation rate would remain high for a very long time.
