Tired of carrying your headphones everywhere? This is also the feeling of the two inventors of Inflabi, an inflatable helmet for bicycles (and scooters, skateboards, etc.) whose crowdfunding campaign has just been launched.
Still at the prototype stage when it was presented at Eurobike last June, the Inflabi has evolved and is now presented in its almost final version. Its design has been revised and its creators plan to market it next spring.
Less bulky than a 50 cl bottle of water, according to its designers, the Inflabi is made up of an inflatable structure with several chambers. It is designed to deflate in 5 seconds and reinflate in 20 to 45 seconds with a small, compact hand pump up to a pressure of 2 bars. The latter is indicated on the pump supplied with the helmet.

Since the Eurobike, the Inflabi has gained an external protective textile layer which at the same time makes its design more classic. The start-up ensures that its fabric is breathable and waterproof at the same time.
The Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign serving as pre-orders is already a success, the minimum level of $10,901 having even been exceeded by almost 50% as we write these lines. If the next levels of $20,000, $30,000 and $100,000 are reached, they will respectively unlock a new mint green color (black interior), 2 new sizes S and XL and a 3rd color which will be determined by a vote of contributors .
Up to 4 times more protective than standard, but awaiting certification
As with any campaign of this kind, however, there is a risk that the product will never see the light of day and that its contributors will lose the money they invested in it. In this case, the Inflabi must still pass the certification tests of the European standard EN1078, essential for its marketing.
The start-up nevertheless seems confident, even ensuring that its helmet is up to 4 times safer compared to the safety standards defined by the standard. Doubt remains as to the density of the external polyamide protective fabric, which might make the helmet a little heavier. For more resistance, this might go from 275 g/m² to 390 g/m², it is explained in the description of the Indiegogo campaign. The Inflabi will nevertheless remain quite light, at 250 g.
Designed and manufactured in Germany, the Inflabi should enter production in March 2024, with first deliveries expected from April. The first 50 copies were sold for €99. The next 100 are priced at €119. Once they have all found buyers, the Inflabi will increase to €139 for the next 200 copies. It should ultimately cost €159 once the preferential rates have disappeared.
