Did you know that part of the Pirates of the Caribbean treasure ended up one day in Dieppe (Seine-Maritime). The Dieppe City of Art and History service tells us regarding this incredible historical episode.
Next time you watch the first movie, pay attention to Captain Barbossa’s words when he talks regarding Hernan Cortes’ Aztec Treasure.
Admittedly, the story has been changed for the film, but it is indeed the treasure of the last emperor of the Aztecs or the treasure of Montezuma which inspired the director Gore Verbinski for the first opus of the Pirates of the Caribbean saga, The Curse of the Black Pearl. Explanations.
A treasure stolen from the Spaniards
The story of this treasure begins in 1522, when the Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes decides to bring back the treasure of the last emperor of the Aztecs, obtained two years earlier, to his emperor Charles V. The treasure is so important that three caravels are needed to cross the Atlantic.
Having heard of this incredible booty, the corsair Jean Fleury decides to attack the three caravels off the Azores archipelago. Finally, the French corsair captures two of the three caravels and brings them back to its owner, the Dieppois Jehan Ango.
A huge emerald
According to Pierre Martuyr d’Engheira, contemporary author of Fleury, the treasure was composed of “a fine emerald, as wide as the palm of the hand; furnishings of gold and silver tableware, such as cups, vases, dishes, bowls, pots and other pieces on which were engraved figures of birds, fish and other animals of various genres…”.
For their part, the Spaniards are furious once morest Jean Fleury, and in particular the Emperor Charles V who demands the capture of the Frenchman.

In 1527, the Spaniards succeeded in taking the corsair prisoner and took him not far from the city of Toledo to sentence him to hang, despite his status as a corsair. Charles V himself signed the Frenchman’s death warrant. Jean Fleury therefore dies, but he will have been the first corsair to have attacked the Spanish ships returning from America.
No more traces, or almost…
With this treasure, Jehan Ango would have started the construction of his mansion located in Varengeville-sur-Mer. Unfortunately, today there is no longer any trace of the treasure, except for an emerald which is located in the Museum of Fine Arts in Vienna.
