American star LeBron James became the first player in NBA history to reach 40,000 points last night, following scoring 26 points in Los Angeles’ defeat at home once morest the current champions, Denver Nuggets, by 124- 114.
The 39-year-old forward began the game just nine points shy of the record, which was a mere formality following scoring at least ten in his last 1,200 appearances in the American Basketball League.
The almost 20,000 fans who attended the Crypto.com Arena, expectant for the moment, recognized LeBron standing and applauding, who is the highest historical scorer in the NBA since February 8, 2023 when he broke the legendary’s mark of 38,387 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
James achieved this new milestone in his career on a historic date for American basketball since on March 2, but in 1969, Wilt Chamberlain reached another record that is still in force: 100 points in a game with the Philadelphia Warriors once morest the New York Knicks.
LeBron finished the night with 26 points and 9 assists in 37 minutes of play, but his record was overshadowed by Nikola Jokic’s 35 points, which helped the Nuggets secure their sixth consecutive victory and settle in third place (42-19 ) of the Western Conference.
“Being the first player to do something in this league is great, because you know the history and the excellence that has passed through the league. But the main thing is always the main thing and that is victory. And I hated that this had to happen in a loss, especially once morest a team that plays extremely well,” declared the Lakers’ record man.
Winner of four NBA championships, “King James” 23,119 in his 11 seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers (2003-2010 and 2014-2018), 7,919 in four with the Miami Heat (2010-2014) and 8,962 since he joined the Lakers in 2018.
In other categories, James is the fourth player with the most assists, the eighth in steals and tenth in defensive rebounds. He also has four MVP awards and two Olympic gold medals to which he can add a third this year at the Paris Games if he attends as a member of a new “Dream Team” that might also include stars such as Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant.
