On Facebook, Kendall Rust photographed the total eclipse in the Arkanas sky. A photo quickly went viral this Monday, April 8.

The most beautiful photo of the year? Millions of Americans photographed the total eclipse that crossed the United States on Monday, April 8, a spectacular phenomenon that plunged the day into darkness. One of them, Kendall Rust, was able to capture one of the most viral images of the day.

His photo, posted on Facebook, was shared and liked thousands of times in just a few hours. We see the Sun perfectly hidden by the Moon, the light of the star accompanying an airliner.

The scene took place above the town of Jonesboro, in Arkansas, a state in the east-central United States. “What an incredible experience!” the photographer wrote.

The event began at 6 p.m. on Mexico’s Pacific coast. Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador was in the seaside city of Mazatlan, where he looked forward to an “unforgettable day.”

In the United States alone, more than 30 million people lived in the area where the total eclipse was visible, lasting a few minutes at most.

For weeks, American authorities have hammered home safety instructions, including the need to wear special glasses to look at the Sun, under penalty of serious eye damage. Among the emblematic places where the eclipse will be visible are also Niagara Falls.

The eclipse was also admired from the air: some airlines had planned flights along the path of darkness, for which tickets were snapped up. Even more impressive, SpaceX revealed images of the eclipse seen from space via one of its Starlink satellites.

Total eclipses occur when the Moon comes exactly between the Earth and the Sun, temporarily blocking the light of our star in broad daylight. The Sun is approximately 400 times larger than the satellite, but also 400 times further away, and the two stars therefore appear of a similar size.
