Sébastien Haller does not have a career like the others. From his debut at AJ Auxerre to his transfer to Dortmund, the Ivorian international had to show patience, intelligence and self-sacrifice. So many qualities that even allowed him to win the most important match of his career, once morest cancer.
Haller, a big one very quickly
A native of Ris-Orangis (Essonne), Sébastien Haller joined the AJ Auxerre training center very early on. Selected for the U14 French Cup at Clairefontaine in 2009 with Burgundy, he joined the French youth teams, up to the Espoirs. After 57 appearances with AJA, he eventually made his way to the Netherlands and Utrecht, first on loan and then on a permanent transfer. A destination that surprised more than one. But in the Eredivisie, Haller made a name for himself, racking up the goals to eventually fly to Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt.
In the meantime, the French international hopeful has become an Ivorian international, honoring his mother. And in Frankfurt, Haller is a hit. 33 goals in 77 games with the German club, where he discovered the European Cup and won the German Cup in 2018. In Germany, the Ivorian is not just anyone. And these great performances open the doors to the Premier League and West Ham. But in England, mayonnaise does not take. Under David Moyes, Haller played very little and returned to the Eredivisie, this time at Ajax.
Consecration and the hard blow
Transferred once morest 22 million euros in Amsterdam, Sébastien Haller strikes very hard and finds all his sensations as scorers. In a single season, he scored a whopping 47 goals. But it also and above all marks the spirits, especially on the European scene. For his first match in C1 with the Dutch club, once morest Sporting, the Ivorian scored a quadruple. During the group stage, Haller walks on water and confirms that he has become one of the best number 9s in the world. This is also why in 2022, Borussia Dortmund offers him a four-year contract.

back in Bundesliga, the Ivorian was cut short when he was diagnosed with testicular cancer, a few days following signing. Weeks, months of uncertainties, fears, fights follow. Operated twice, the former Auxerrois was forced to leave the field for many months, before overcoming the disease and returning in January. It only took six months for Sébastien Haller to find competition and the path to goal.
Approved by Signal Iduna Park on January 22, 2023, he will be one of the great architects of BvB’s exceptional comeback, which will ultimately fail on the last day of the Bundesliga, once morest Mainz. Haller will miss a penalty, but whatever. The Ivorian international has come a long way. As often, he had to fight twice, three times more than ordinary mortals to achieve his ends. In a path strewn with pitfalls, Haller remains standing, sure of his strength. And the BvB will have quite a weapon in its ranks next season.
