The first session of the year allowed us to evoke, thanks to Jean-Michel Delmas, the incredible journey of Robert de Flers and Emmanuel Chaulié in 1918 across Europe.
The first 2024 session of the Agen Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts was divided between local history and… Dantesque adventure.
The first speaker who spoke on Wednesday January 10 at the Ladrix hotel is a colorful character. With extreme modesty, Alain Glayroux, co-founder with the late Bernard Lareynie of “La Mémoire du rivière”, recounted the history of this historic magazine which, from 1992 until 2022, published a number of bulletins recounting the little stories and the great History of a part of our land. 110 historians or enthusiasts will have collaborated rigorously on this great adventure which ended in December 2022 with the publication of number 66 of the Bulletin of study and research on the history of Tonneins and Tonneinquais which celebrated its 30 years of existence. existence.

From now on, Alain Glayroux will continue to devote himself to the publication of works with the ambition of highlighting the little-known actors of history, whether they are soldiers who died anonymously for France or elected officials whose History until now has not retained the names. When the magazine’s eponymous association was created, the two founders fought for a semblance of recognition. A few decades later, the town of Tonneins is proud of its digital history museum (museehistoiredetonneins.fr) which would never have existed without The Memory of the River.
The incredible adventure of Robert de Flers
Jean-Michel Delmas is well known to our readers, who for several weeks have discovered “The incredible destiny of Jean Rodes” in the Sunday edition. It was an incredible epic, in the middle of the World War from February to March 1918, that the agronomist-historian revealed to the members of the Academy. Robert de Flers, a very famous artist of his time (musician, creator of operettas, etc.) was sent on a mission to support the morale of the Francophiles, subjects of Queen Marie of Romania, while Germany was exerting increasing pressure on them. . Accompanied by Emmanuel Chaumié (son of Joseph Chaumié), the artist will travel from London to the northern tip of Europe (in order to bypass Finland in the grip of a terrible civil war) to Ukraine and finally the Republic of Moldova (now Romania), a journey full of twists and turns. By boat caught in the ice, by trains which stop every ten kilometres, the two friends, following having repeatedly avoided the worst or even visited the Kremlin, will succeed in reaching their destination where the adored Robert de Flers will deliver several conferences.

If the playwright, academician and editor-in-chief of Le Figaro, died in 1927 in Vittel of pulmonary congestion, Emmanuel Chaumié, deputy for Lot-et-Garonne from 1924 to 1928, who became director of civil aviation, died in 1934 ( irony) in the crash of the plane which provided the first France-Indochina connection.
A session of the Academy which will have rehabilitated some forgotten people of contemporary history.
