The real estate barometer of notaries indicates a sharp decline in sales of building land in Belgium since the beginning of the year. In Wallonia, the decline even reached 20.5%. It is in Walloon Brabant that plots cost the most, which, in turn, pushes up prices in neighboring Hainaut. The dream of the four-sided house Desperate Housewives is on the way to becoming an inaccessible mirage for the vast majority of Belgians. At least if we go by the barometer of notaries concerning the sale of building land published on Wednesday. The figures available for the first six months of 2023 indicate a decline in activity both at the national level (-10%) and at the regional level (-20.5% in Wallonia). So much so that the spokesperson for Notaire.be, Renaud Grégoire, now considers that the purchase of land to build one’s future home has become “a luxury product”.

According to the barometer (figures compiled from notaries), a Walloon who decided to buy building land had to spend an average of 128 euros per square meter in 2023. A relatively stable figure compared to 2022, but which remains much higher than before the covid. At the time, the Walloon average was below the 100 euro mark.
