the “improvement” of air conditioning is halfway done 2024-07-18 09:39:53

Cuba’s main airport, the José Martí International Airport in Havana, has yet to fully resolve the issue of air conditioning and climate control in Terminal 3, the main arrival zone for international flights.

According to a report from the government on Tuesday, the reactivation of one of the two refrigeration units of the centralized air conditioning system at Terminal 3 of the José Martí International Airport brought some “improvement” amid the stifling summer heat and the typical discomforts of high temperatures in the facility for travelers.

The Minister of Transport, Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila, reported through his Facebook page that although this measure does not represent a definitive solution to the inconvenience caused since last May, it does mark an important step towards the complete restoration of the terminal’s air conditioning system and its subsequent modernization, something that will not happen until well into next year.

This Terminal 3 of the Havana Airport needs two chillers (water chillers) of 600 tons each, to maintain the climate, that is, the air conditioning at a level to cool the entire area, but right now only one is working and at 85% of its capacity. So the improvement is hardly noticeable.

Havana Airport and its lack of air conditioning

This Havana airport was completely without air conditioning during June, because while one of the chillers was being serviced, the other one that was half-powered broke down. And the air conditioning equipment rooftop (compact coolers that deliver cold air directly through insulated ducts) there were no conditions for installing them.

Since May 15, we have been denouncing the situation at the airport and its unsustainability when the summer months approach, as has finally happened.

When will the final solution be available? The new equipment will arrive in 2025 and, according to the authorities, only then will there be a constant cooling capacity and a safe reserve.

More than 10,000 passengers pass through José Martí International Airport every day and more than 50 international flights are operated.
